Celebrating the Whitehorse-Lancieux Friendship
Whitehorse, September 4, 2019 - The City of Whitehorse and the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) invite you to celebrate the 19th Anniversary of the Whitehorse-Lancieux Sister City connection this Friday, September 6 at 12:00 p.m. at City Hall. The celebration will begin with speeches and light refreshments in Council Chambers, followed by the raising of the Lancieux flag in front of City Hall at 12:30 p.m.
Both cities share a history with the poet Robert W. Service as he adopted these two locations as his homes for his poetic inspirations. The great affection he had for these towns still brings the sister cities of Whitehorse and Lancieux together today.
"We are privileged to enjoy such a strong, long-lasting relationship with Lancieux. We have been sister cities for 19 years, but the bond between our communities goes back many decades. We truly value our growing Francophone community and appreciate the volunteers in the Yukon and in France who continue to ensure this relationship thrives," said Whitehorse Mayor Dan Curtis.
"We are truly honoured to celebrate the friendship between Whitehorse, a city in Canada's far north, and Lancieux, a town on the French coast, two communities which inspired the poet Robert W. Service and which he chose to call home. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the City of Whitehorse for this annual collaboration," said Jeanne Beaudoin, President of AFY.
