New self-guided tours to explore the Yukon
Whitehorse, May 2, 2017 - The Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) is proud to announce the launch of a network of sightseeing circuits, "Le Yukon autrement: head out to discover untold stories" on the BaladoDiscovery mobile application. These unique self-guided tours mark a new milestone for Francophone tourism development in the territory.
The six tours plunge users into the heart of the Yukon to discover little-known faces and stories, past and present, on foot, by bike or by car. One of the Whitehorse tours presents some of the French-speaking Yukonners who contributed to the social, cultural and economic life of the territory, and is available in English.
"Francophone tourism contributes to the economic prosperity of the Yukon and we are very proud to present this tool which enhances the French tourism offering," said Angélique Bernard, President of the AFY.
The tours are available for free download using the BaladoDiscovery app for Android and iOS. The platform, which boasts the largest network of guided tours in Canada, allows users to discover places at their own pace, guided by a mobile device, with or without an Internet connection.
"The Department of Economic Development was pleased to provide $35,000 to support development of self-guided tours," Minister responsible for the French Language Services Directorate John Streicker said. "Not only will this boost our tourism sector, but it will also showcase and capitalize on the economic potential of the Franco-Yukon community. AFY's initiative is an example of how we can work with the regions to identify innovative ideas and build sustainable and diverse economies."
"Thanks to this app, Francophone tourists will have access to wonderful tours of Yukon. This exciting new product will also benefit anyone who is interested in learning more about Whitehorse's rich francophone history, including our local residents," enthused Whitehorse Mayor Dan Curtis.
This project was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon - Economic Development.
Official voice and leader in the development of the Yukon French-speaking community since 1982, the AFY aims to improve the quality of life of Yukon Francophones.
