Yukon Election 2016: AFY ready to work with the new Government
Whitehorse, November 9, 2016 - The Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) congratulates Sandy Silver and new members of Parliament of the Yukon Liberal Party who will form the Yukon's next majority government. The AFY also salutes all the persons elected to the Legislative Assembly for the next five years.
"We were pleased to see that, for the first time in an election campaign in the territory, Yukon Francophonie was part of the platforms of the three main parties," said AFY President Angélique Bernard. "We are ready to work with the new Government towards greater access to French services in the Yukon and the development of the Yukon Francophone community."
During the election campaign, the Yukon Liberal Party clearly committed itself to taking concrete action that will benefit the Yukon's Franco-Yukon community based on the requests AFY submitted in its position paper "Taking action for a vibrant and dynamic Yukon Francophone Community". Building a Francophone high school and working with the Francophone community to find practical solutions in the priority areas of health care, including emergency services, primary care and mental health, are but a few examples of the commitments published in the October 16, 2016 issue of the French newspaper l'Aurore boréale.
The AFY will request a meeting with the new Premier, as well as the person responsible for the Yukon government's French Language Services Directorate as soon as he or she has been appointed, to discuss Franco-Yukon issues and identify the priorities for action.
The AFY recognizes the work of the candidates who participated in this campaign and gives special thanks to Elaine Taylor, outgoing Minister of the French Language Services Directorate, for her tremendous support in dealing with Yukon Francophone files over the past few years.
The position paper is available, in both official languages, at
