Journée de la francophonie yukonnaise 2019: Let's celebrate together!
Whitehorse, May 15, 2019 - The Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) is excited to invite Yukoners to celebrate the 13th annual Journée de la francophonie yukonnaise (JFY). Since 2007, this day has recognized the role Francophones have played for nearly 200 years in the development of the Yukon. The JFY helps give the Yukon community a better understanding and appreciation of Francophone culture and its strong presence in the territory.
"This day is not only an important way to recognize Francophones' contribution to the development of the Yukon, but also a special opportunity to highlight the dynamism of the Yukon's Francophone community today," said AFY President Jeanne Beaudoin.
"Yukon Francophonie Day is an ideal opportunity to celebrate the contribution of Francophones to the vitality of our territory," declared Mr. John Streicker, Minister responsible for the French Language Services Directorate. "We can all be proud of our diverse and growing Francophone community, which contributes to making Yukon a dynamic and prosperous territory and a great place to live."
From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre, Yukoners are invited to don their best white and blue clothes for a bilingual reception. Those who attend will enjoy a welcome cocktail and canapés, background music by young violinists, and an art workshop by La Caravane boréale des dix mots. Young attendees will have an opportunity to create a group art work in the children's area.
This year's JFY will mark the launch of a new community recognition program with the awarding of the Outstanding Community Involvement prize.
The AFY would like to acknowledge the government of the Yukon and the government of Canada for their financial contribution and their support for the Yukon Francophone community, and the cities of Whitehorse and Dawson, for raising the Yukon Francophone flag every year in recognition of the day.
