Yukon Francophonie Day 2018: a celebration that brings people together
Whitehorse, May 15, 2018 - Together with the government of Yukon, the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) is pleased to invite Yukoners to celebrate the 12th annual Yukon Francophonie Day (YFD). Since 2007, this day has recognized the role played by Francophones for nearly 200 years in the development of the Yukon. The YFD gives the Yukon community a better understanding and appreciation of the Francophone culture and its strong presence in the territory.
"Once again this year, the activities on the program are the result of remarkable community collaboration," explained AFY Interim President Jeanne Beaudoin. "Not only is the Yukon Francophonie Day an important recognition of nearly two centuries of Francophone contribution to the development of the Yukon; it is also an opportunity to celebrate the vitality and dynamism of the Yukon Francophone community today."
"I am really looking forward to taking part in the festivities marking the 12th edition of Yukon Francophonie Day," John Streicker, Minister responsible for the French Language Services Directorate, said. "Yukon is proud of its diverse and growing French-speaking community--a major contributor to the development of our territory."
This year, the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre will be transformed into a laboratory where all YFD activities will be held.
• Elders from Whitehorse long-term care facilities will enjoy a private concert by Brigitte Desjardins and Ryan McNally.
• From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Yukoners are invited to a bilingual reception. The program will include: a welcoming cocktail with appetizers, an interactive game led by Dr. Arpythagorean and his team, and an animation drawing activity with La Caravane boréale des dix mots.
• Younger visitors will enjoy making candies or doing science experiments in the kids' area.
The AFY would like to acknowledge the governments of Yukon and Canada for their support for the Yukon Francophone community, the Commission scolaire francophone du Yukon and the Partenariat communauté en santé for their contribution to the children's activities, and the cities of Whitehorse and Dawson, for raising the Yukon Francophone flag every year in recognition of the day.
